external display autodetect

Hi everybody,

I searched the apple lists for an appropiate place to ask the following
question, I hope to have found the right one!

I occasionally use my G4 powerbook (Macos x 10.2.8) with an external Eizo
Flexscan F56 CRT Monitor and "autodetect display" in system preferences
offer me different resolutions at 75 Hz, though I know the monitor as well
as the video card can handle higher frequencies (which I need because my
eye can still see 75 Hz flickering).

Strangely, when the powerbook is "awake" and I plug in the external
monitor and choose "mirror display" without a prior "autodetect display",
it offers me a 1024x768 resolution at 85 Hz which works fine but when I
close the powerbooks lit, or when it wakes up from sleeping it seems to
run an "autodetect displays" and change my settings to 1280x1024 at 75Hz.

I did not find any help on how to choose external monitor settings purely
manually, not on the mac nor in the web. I am grateful for any ideas/hints
what to do about this.

Thanks,
Joerg
