Mysterious nulls in NSScriptCommand

The saga of AppleScript in Delicious Library continues...

So we have class "shelf" that has an element "medium" relating to the class "medium"

In my limited grasp of the language, it seems like the way to add a medium to a shelf would be:

set last item of media of varSomeShelf to varSomeMedium

However, this throws an exception:
An exception was thrown during execution of an NSScriptCommand...
Error while creating a script command: there's no Objective-C class '(null)' corresponding to the .sdef-declared type '(null)'.

I'm sure I'm missing something entirely obvious. Thoughts?

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, are there any other patterns that immediately spring to mind to put a thing into a container?
