app question

i am new to the list and applescript... i have gotten interested in it
looking for a way to create(re) an old utility that i used for a long
time that seems like it will never make it over to X.

the utility is called CD Folder Partitioner and here is the description
of what it does:

Description

This very simple utility is useful when you have a folder too big to be
copied into a CD-R, ZIP or other cartridge. CD Folder Partitioner has a
single feature: reorganize a folder content into multiple sub-folders,
each one having a limited size.

Main features

Splits a folder into multiple folders, using a specified maximum size.
Can optionally split files to optimize the filling of the folders (or for
large files).
Reconstitutes the original folder and files.

Misc

The folder and subfolder structure is preserved when spliting and
recontitution.

does anyone if this is possible under applescript at all... any comments
would be very much appreciated...
