But is there any way to access mySQL with native AppleScript (maybe via
ScriptingAddition or helper app) that keeps persistent connections, allows
placeholders in SQL queries, and binding variables in SELECT queries?

After using the perl DBI/DBD modules for many years, having to pass each query
through 'do shell script' is way too cumbersome for anything other than casual
use.

But I will agree that being able to use 'do shell script' as an option is
better than nothing.
