What worked best for me, especially in terms of robustness and error
handling, was to write a small C code using libXML (included in the OS at
some point in 10.3.x) which I call through a do shell script from my studio
app. I found libXML to be a powerful and fast way to walk an XML tree and
extract values. An added benefit is that the C code would be cross
platform, if that's a consideration.
