Matt,
One bug and one feature request ;-) I'll file them right away. (note to self: Buy Matt's new book)
Incidentally, I had some time to play with this a little more and found that it was originally my fault. I had not disconnected the event handler from the object before deleting it. It turns out that once you do that, there is absolutely no way to break the relationship even if the object no longer exists. Even recreating the object with the exact same properties, linking, and then unlinking does not help.
So, until this is resolved, my advice is to disconnect all event handles from an object before you delete it. The phantoms will stay away.
Best,
John

That's two bugs you should be filing... :) m.
PS I know, I know. I hate filing bugs. It's a pain in the butt filing them,
and it's a pain in the butt when Apple writes back to you telling you you're
an idiot, and it's a pain in the butt when you write back to them telling
them that no, they're idiots, and so on. But Leopard is coming, and the
rumor mill says that AppleScript Studio might be getting some attention, and
in any case nothing is going to change without impetus. So please, just suck
it up and file.
