In this case ( if Mail requires the apple path) something like

set fileName to "ABC"
set fileExtension to ".rtfd"
set theAttachment1 to fileName & fileExtension
set theAttachment to (((path to desktop) as string) & theAttachment1)

may be the easiest way.

Thats a handy call method to know! thanks. 

I read on to see that the "choose file" approach worked for Rich, so his script is working, and I've had the same trouble in the past, it requires the apple path and as alias..
