Shane-

I finally figured out that the problem was with the PDFs, not the script. The
PDFs were created by an external source in such a manner that they couldn't be
concatenated (via script or manually) in Acrobat 5 (does anyone know what
internal workings of Acrobat would cause this?). Once we switched to a machine
using Acrobat 4, the script worked fine.

Sorry about posting prematurely-I should've done much more troubleshooting
beforehand.

Thanks, Shane & David Wadson for your help on this.
