AB: launch app in background?

short: how do I launch an application in the background?
eg:
tell app "Address Book"
activate in the background
end tell

long:
I want to get access to the data in the Address Book, and to be honest I'd rather not have the AB open. But it seems at this point I either have to write an Obj C program, which I am not really ready to do, or use AS to control AB. So I figure my best bet is to be able to launch it in the background, is that do able?
