I get a different but consistent number in Jaguar, a different number
every time in OS 9.2.2, but the expected error in OS 8.6.

It is strange that this happens in older systems and I've never noticed
the error.
May be I do not use this kind of coercion as much as I thought!
It seems to be
something to do with coercions and the fact that '(text item 2 of "9")'
is a reference.
I agree, it is something with coercion and error.
If you multiply it by 1 rather than 1 by it, the expected
error occurs on all three systems.
Actually it does not happen with division no matter "where" you divide
1/(text item 2 of "9") --> error as expected
(text item 2 of "9")/1 --> error as expected
Also
(text item 2 of "9")-0 --> error as expected
