Scripts run from the palette can avoid any screen redraw while they are
running, which can speed things up enormously. They also avoid the overhead
of events being sent from one app to another. The difference can be an order
of magnitude or better.

Agreed. But in the case of InDesign it comes at a price: generally slower
scripts, and no keyboard shortcuts. (There are other things too: the ability
to run javascript scripts from the same place, the ability to take advantage
of versioning in CS2, the shortcut for opening the scripts in your choice of
editor.)
