Thank you, Mark! Admirably clear and concise introduction to the sorts of problems I have as self-taught, and also a good explanation of why I then went downstairs and told my boyfriend about taking the global variable out and it started working, he then said, "Something else must be happening, because you then won't have dealt with whatever was setting it to 8 anyway!" Have now told him it's either a persistence thing or I mistakenly set the damn thing locally at the same time and then forgot and it *is* a scope issue...
