Extract sigs script puzzlement

This script used to work:

tell application "Mail"

set foo to the content of the signatures

end tell

Now it times out, and locks up mail.app. I have to force quit Mail and run it again to make it work.

I have 138 signatures in mail; I wonder if I exceeded a magic threshold or something.
