I guess I'm out of my depth here.
I experimented with the System sound Glass.aiff, moving a copy to various locations within my home directory, and had no problem playing it either directly from the command line or via do shell script.
I was also able to use afplay to play .mp3 files, but ran into an identical error with some OS 9 Sound Files, and a similar error (Error: ExtAudioFileOpen failed ('dta?') with some other file types.
Information on ExtAudioFileOpen errors is pretty sparse, and I'm not sure I'd understand it even if the three-letter identifiers were defined somewhere findable.
