AppleTalk strangeness

At a client site we are zoning AppleTalk using AUR. Initially this
functioned perfectly. Since replacing the old switch with a Netgear model a
few months ago, each Mac shows the Your AppleTalk network is now available9
at startup, shortly after reaching the desktop. This (seemingly) did not
interfere with logging onto the ASIP server over IP on startup.

Last week the ASIP server (graphite G4, ASIP 6.3.3, OS9.1) crashed a couple
of times, and on Friday I gave it a quick overhaul (deleted Desktop DB/DF
from each partition, ran Disk First Aid, Disk Doctor, ASIP First Aid). Was
subsequently looking at File Server Status, and noticed that a couple of G4s
had logged in via AppleTalk rather than IP.

Having identified the two offenders, I tried (not all at once) deleting the
Recent Servers9 AMI, the Servers9 folder itself, TCP/IP prefs, AppleShare
Prep, and AppleTalk prefs. No joy. One of the Macs was seemingly fixed by
switching from DHCP, to manual TCP./IP config, restarting, and switching
back to DHCP. The other didn9t respond to this, but was cured9 by applying
manual TCP/IP settings.

But today I have discovered that *every* Mac (all of which are at 9.2.2)
that was switched off over the weekend has been reconnected over AppleTalk
If I dismount and remount the ASIP served sharepoints they will connect via
ASIP.

I9m a bit bemused by the whole AT/IP connectivity thang. On a couple of
occasions following power outages the ASIP server has been started *before*
the AppleTalk zoning Mac has been switched on. In the absence of zones, all
Macs will log on as AppleTalk, which to my mind is very counter-intuitive -
I9d expect possible disruption to AppleTalk services, but why the hell
should IP care if there9s AT zoning or not?

I can get around the problem by preventing login on startup9, and I can
quite possibly disable AppleTalk connectivity to the server altogether, but
has anyone any idea as to why this should happen? Have never seen such a
thing in all my long years blah blah blah...

Any help will be gratefully jumped upon.

Mark
