from the Princeton University help desk:

Title: Macintosh: Slow keyboard response after OS 9 and MS Office upgrade

Synopsis:

After updating from Mac OS 9 to 9.2.2 and Office 98 to Office 2001 there is a
lag from the time you type into the keyboard and when you see what you typed
on the screen - restarting helps for a short time but the lag comes back and
gradually gets slower and slower. How do I fix it?

Solution:

The slow keyboard problem appears to be caused by a bug in Apple's CD/DVD
extension included with OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2.

The key parts seem to be Mac OS 9.2.x, an internal zip drive and a sleeping
machine. After the machine wakes from sleep, keyboard response is very slow.
Characters appearing on-screen lag a few seconds behind user keystrokes.

Inserting a disk into the zip drive, any zip disk, will clear the problem
until the machine sleeps again. Ejecting the zip disk does not cause the
problem to return. If a zip disk is already inserted before the machine wakes,
the problem will not occur. A few other workarounds are available but none are
permanent. Apple hasn't acknowledged this problem yet.

The best workaround is to prevent the machine from sleeping and to have a zip
disk handy to quickly reset the zip drive if the sluggish keyboard problem
returns. Campus machines should not be configured to sleep if they are running
TSM.

If the zip drive is never used, disabling the Iomega extension or physically
removing the internal zip drive will prevent the problem from occurring.
Replacing the OS 9.2.x CD/DVD driver with one from an OS 9.1 system may
prevent the problem from occurring but we have not tested this workaround.

Apple has ceased development of OS 9. We do not expect a solution to this
problem.
