Re: Files locked/in use?

This box was never anything but a server.
512MB RAM, virtual memory OFF. Only serves about 50 people.
Err, use Resedit to what? Delete the PDS files? Never tried that one. How?
Is it just making an invisible file visible and deleting it?
I've hit it with ASIP First Aid many times, rebuilding the PDS and U&G.
You think that I should set up a new U&G from scratch?

Perhaps your hardware is also suspicious. Either way-a clean install of
the
OS and ASIP with a new U&G file will tell much. Delete the pds files as
well
and run Disk First Aid on the drives. Use Resedit to do this works eaisly
as
well. How much ram is in the box? How steady was the box before used as a
server?
Any reason to think it was spiked at some point?

9.1 and ASIP are relatively foolproof if all is well and enough ram sits
in
the box.

I'm constantly getting random files showing as locked or in use when
they're not, as far as I can tell.
Here's what happens: user opens file (usually a Quark Xpress file), makes
edits, then gets a "file locked" error when attempting to save. There was
no such warning when opening the file. File can't be copied to users
machine.
I can go to the server, duplicate the file, and delete the original, and
all is well until it happens again, maybe. Files that were thrown away
won't delete - the system says that they're in use. These files also
display and error(unknown) when Retrospect attempts to back them up.

This began happening a short time after the system finally stabilized
after freezing every other day, for no discernible reason. In attempting
to fix that, I rebuilt the Users & Groups, drive PDS', and Desktops
several times. Frankly, I don't know what fixed it. I'm unwilling to put a

huge amount of effort into this puppy, since an Xserve is coming down the
pipes (don't worry, ASIP will continue to be used for an Archive server.)

This machine gave us fits when it was initially installed, freezing every
day or so. It was finally (mysteriously) stable, but that habit has come
back twice now in the 4 years it's been on place. I know - but I wasn't in

charge when the decision was made to go with the machine. Should have
traded it for one of the nearly identical desktops purchased at the same
time.

I suppose that I could do a clean install of 9.1 and ASIP 6.3.3, but I
fear making it unhappier than it is at the moment. :/
Maybe I should just have AShare Helper restart the server every day? Would

that make it let go of the files?
