.Mac discussion is a good thing

I'll pay it gladly.

Apple's take on this would be that it would dilute the "brand" of .Mac. They want to position .Mac as an extension to the desktop so we now have web storage that's actually useful, IMAP/webmail that has enough capacity, anti-virus software (which far too many people skip), Backup software (that is obviously a 1.0 version but, like everything, will improve) and features in the future.

With .Mac, I'm more concerned about the details.
Will "email accounts" attached to a paid account still be able to use iCal or iChat? According to the .Mac support forum, yes with iChat.
Will Apple ever start to use Keychain for their own websites (.Mac, Apple Store, AppleID, ADC)? Apparently we need to feed this back...

The raging debate I don't see as entirely negative. Some of us have our own opinions as MUG leaders. We also need to debate the positions we have with other people so that, when the time comes, we can present and educated and balanced opinion to our members. I personally think .Mac is a great step forward but I have to balance that with the caveats raised by other people when presenting it to others.
