FYI: The stars are the actual output (smart thing not to write passwords to the console).

And yes, you are probably right that this router does not support a port mapping protocol. It would have been too good.

I will try to put a little article of my efforts into my blog, my questions seem very basic so maybe with Stuart's help that could be that start of an FAQ for dns-sd.org. One of those questions would be: How do I find a router that works?

Try re-entering your password (shared secret) again in the Pref Pane. I'm not sure if you converted it to asterisks just to hide it on the mailing list, but it's possible that it wasn't entered correctly. The bigger problem is that you appear to be behind a NAT which doesn't support a port mapping protocol.
