Re: iChat, iTunes, ARD

Hi Shao,

I am not entirely sure if this question belongs here or not:

Does anyone know if Apple is going to incorporate wide-area Bonjour into:

- iChat (Bonjour mode, finding contacts)

By default iChat currently only browses and registers in the local domain, however, there's an unsupported preference to enable iChat to use wide-area Bonjour. This preference has not been fully tested and could have unforeseen consequences, so please be cautious with this turned on as it's completely unsupported. First, quit iChat and then kill iChatAgent. Then type the following in Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.iChat.SubNet UseGlobalDomain -bool YES

The main limitation with wide-area Bonjour iChat is you can only receive chats from people if they appear in your Bonjour buddy list, which means that they must be registered in the same domains as you are, otherwise the chat request will be ignored. Inversely, you can only send messages to people if you appear in their Bonjour buddy list.

- iTunes (media sharing)

iTunes is limited to the local domain and I have no idea if they have plans to ever change this.

- Apple Remote Desktop admin (as another Scanner option "Bonjour Domain"
with a domain text box or something like this)

This would be a great feature. Currently Apple Remote Desktop does not use Bonjour to browse. I'd encourage you to file an enhancement request if you'd like to see ARD admin support wide-area Bonjour browsing.

- Apple Remote Desktop "clients" (advertising themselves)

ARD client already supports wide-area Bonjour and will register in a wide-area Bonjour domain automatically if your machine has the Bonjour Pref Pane installed and is configured to register in a specific domain.

If this isn't considered Bonjour development, I sincerely apologize.
IMHO anyone developing apps with Bonjour functionality should include the
wide-area aspects, where applicable. It's just so useful it's brilliant.

Thanks. We like it too.

Best Regards,
-Marc
