I use the "asr" tool for doing this. Here's a sample commandline:

sudo asr -erase -nocheck -source TigerSomething.dmg -target /Volumes/MyScratchInstallerVolume

This will erase MyScratchInstallerVolume and write the disk image contents to it. You can then reboot from MyScratchInstallerVolume and install wherever you like. Typically, therefore, you need at least two free partitions, one for the installer and one for your OS boot partition.
