I use the "asr" tool for doing this. Here's a sample commandline:
sudo asr -erase -nocheck -source TigerSomething.dmg -target
/Volumes/MyScratchInstallerVolume
I managed to solve it using Disk Utility. What I hadn't realized was
that I needed to prepare the disk image for restore, before trying to
restore it. It seems as though Disk Utility could have told me this,
but no.
