Where does CFPreferencesSetAppValue save it's values?

I have a call to CFPreferencesSetAppValue(CFStringFromKey(key),NumberRef,mAppID); in my code and I'm trying to figure out where this information is saved. I've seen a few comments about it being saved in XML. The header file says that it is saved in the "normal" place, whatever that means.

My code for saving and restoring preferences is crashing my program so I'm obviously doing something stupid somewhere. I figure looking at the values in the XML file would at least allow me to see if the data is being written out.
