That's still 5 lines of code to get rid of the Control Manager function.

I'd just like to point out that there's really nothing wrong with creating a user pane control. It may have a slightly greater amount of overhead (since it allocates some data to store the user pane callback functions that isn't used by the base HIView object), but otherwise, it's still fully supported.
