You could try to get the grow box via HIViewFindByID, passing
kHIViewWindowGrowBoxID and then call HIGrowBoxSetTransparent( true )
on it. It might do what you want.

Oops. The API has the word "View" in it. HIGrowBoxViewSetTransparent.
