I agree that I should use a progress bar in general (and I do) but in this case i'm launching a helper app that simply takes its sweet time launching/loading and showing its window...I really honestly think that displaying the SPOD is a bad plan - it's usually an indication to the user that something has gone horribly horribly wrong (hence the Of Death bit)... You're much better off showing the watch, or a little indefinite progress indicator.
The launch is in response to a user opting for it so I'd like to immediately give the wait cursor to show that the requested action is in progress...
