I didn't realize that the spinning cursor was viewed so evilly... I've always looked at it as the modern replacement for the watch cursor.... but I guess I'm wrong (as is evident by the strong feedback on this matter)!
The watch cursor it shall be!

I really honestly think that displaying the SPOD is a bad plan - it's usually an indication to the user that something has gone horribly horribly wrong (hence the Of Death bit)... You're much better off showing the watch, or a little indefinite progress indicator.
