Ah ha!  I remember where I've seen this.  When the Finder does a copy!

I just dragged about 4GB of files from a file server, and the Finder displays all of the file icons as grey until the copy is complete.  I ran GetFileInfo on the files that weren't copied yet, and it seems that the Finder sets the type/creator to 'brok'/'MACS'.  I had blithely assumed that it was using the documented 'bzy' type too.

So I guess the finder uses its own special type when it copies files.  I'm not going to use that type because it isn't documented anywhere, but it would nice if the Finder wouldn't use a double standard.  ;)
