Re: Inconsistent font metrics for superscript unicode characters

I'm using some superscript numbers in unicode to make some fractions and noticed some inconsistent metrics: ¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹. The subscript numerals are fine: ₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉

These are "SUPERSCRIPT ZERO", "SUPERSCRIPT ONE", ... "SUPERSCRIPT NINE". The values are 2070, 00B9, 00B2, 00B3, 2074, 2075, 2076, 2077, 2078, 2079 (these numbers came from the Character Palette - the 00Bx values are correct, Unicode Checker tells me there are not superscript entries at 2071-2074 like you might expect if you're looking for consistency :).

The font is Lucida Grande for all of them and the problem is I can't create nice looking fractions because of the difference superscript baselines. For example: ¹¹⁄₃₂ looks fine, but ¹₁₆ looks pretty nasty.

An easy work around is to use a font that doesn't show this problem - such as Skia, Hoefler, or Apple Chancery. Obviously none of these are identical to Lucida Grande, but for fractions, you could probably use Skia without too much problem.

To make things worse, look at AppleGothic - not only are they not the same size, but the width is hosed as well.
