An answer to that question would require a better understanding of what
you're trying to accomplish. But without knowing more, it seems like the
obvious answer is that you'll need to install a handler that handles all the
events of interest to you.

I want to do several things, but basically: a) show current drawing coordinates, b) hilite things that are clickable in the current mode, c) handle a tool, which can involve an arbitrary series of clicks, releases, moves, etc.
