I'm sure DR didn't have details on the hardware that would be available or
even when the first models would ship. But somehow the idea of giving away
new iMacs just doesn't seem like an afterthought. I can't help but believe
that they had something planned all along, be it an exchange like this,
credit toward a purchase, or some such thing, but didn't decide exactly what
they would do until more recently. In any case, what they did put people in
the position of making decisions without being able to consider an important
part of the equation.

Personally I still don't regret not getting a DTK. I don't really want an
iMac, as I much prefer using a PowerBook. But I would have liked to have
made my decision with more complete information, and I'm sure there *are*
developers out there who would have opted for the DTK had they known they
wouldn't just be left empty handed at the end. If I were one of those people
I'd *really* be miffed. ;-)
