Did you ever run Disk Utilities "Verify" or "Repair" routines on
the drive?
It sounds like you may have had an orphaned (lost it's parent
directory)
directory or file. Repair would have found & fixed this and
recovered the
missing 300M (or file).
Or done what it did to me in a similar situation and make your disk
unmountable :( Once again DiskWarrior to the rescue.
