Did you ever run Disk Utilities "Verify" or "Repair" routines on the drive?
It sounds like you may have had an orphaned (lost it's parent directory)
directory or file. Repair would have found & fixed this and recovered the
missing 300M (or file).

Or done what it did to me in a similar situation and make your disk unmountable :( Once again DiskWarrior to the rescue.

Drifting offtopic, but do you know when Diskwarrior might be updated to work with Intel macs? I've run into a bizarre situation (radar #4556806) where my Preferences folder eats any files that start past 'J' (they simply vanish), but Disk Utility can't find anything wrong with the filesystem. This problem persists even after archive-and- install the OS, and seems to be triggered by launching Safari. The current Diskwarrior doesn't recognize the drive when mounted from PPC in Firewire Target mode. Any advice appreciated.
