Re: Official statements on the future of Carbon (Re: NewGWorld...)

From the replies so far, I gather that they have not. For the time being, that's not an issue for me. It's not like I have a huge amount of time to dedicate to reacquainting myself with Mac OS X development anyway, and my near-term plan is to focus on Cocoa regardless. I was just curious about the status of Carbon, and figured if anyone had information about it, this mailing list would.

You are correct that Apple has not offered a firm public statement about their future plans for Carbon. The only thing that is definite is that Carbon's UI components will not have 64-bit support in Leopard. This has caused uncertainty among developers about the long-term future of Carbon. Will Apple leave 32-bit Carbon alone, unenhanced but otherwise available in future iterations of the OS? Or will it be broken and removed altogether? The former scenario is one that most developers can probably live with; the latter scenario is obviously of great concern.

It may be that Apple is being tight-lipped about Carbon's future because the company itself has not yet made a decision about it. I have seen no public statement from the major vendors whose applications depend on Carbon (Microsoft and Adobe in particular); their silence on this issue stands in sharp contrast to their public support for the transition to Intel.

In any event, the lack of a clear roadmap on Carbon makes it much harder to make a good decision on how to proceed.

(Disclaimer: I did not attend WWDC and am a basic level member of ADC, so I am not privy to any NDA-type information. My speculations are solely my own opinion.)
