Here's my view on the subject: If this rumored Bertrand person is real and
it was his decision, clearly he's a NeXT bigot and wishes to force his ideas
of how applications should be developed down our throats. Think that's a
good idea? Look how well it worked for NeXT. Maybe we should buy some of
those magnesium NeXTCube boxes and burn them in effigy outside 1 Infinite
Loop.
Furthermore, from a business POV of a commercial developer looking to make a
cross-platform app, financially it makes no sense to write tons of code
twice. Nobody would spend months writing Windows code and more months
writing Cocoa code. If you had limited resources, chances are you'd say
"Forget the Mac port, Windows has a bigger marketshare." Personally I'd
advise developers to write the whole thing in Qt because then it becomes
Trolltech's job to make their stuff work with Cocoa and you get
cross-platform for free.
The fact that Apple (or this Bertrand dude) is forcing developers to do
twice as much work goes against one of the reasons behind switching to x86.
IMHO, if Apple/Developer services/Steve were smart, they'd have bought
Metrowerks (for couch cushion change) and Trolltech and they'd have had a
pretty damn good setup. Plus if they own Metrowerks they could control a
piece of the embedded system market.
Beyond that, I'd say that Apple developer services should take a cue from
Microsoft when it comes to documentation. Got a question about a particular
Windows call? The database is full of example code and lots of detailed
information. Searching on Apple for information on a call is just weak.
When I search, don't show me PDF and HTML versions of the same damn
information. Don't show me the Japanese version either. Oh, and I don't
write in Java so you can weed out that noise to.
Last year Apple had $10,110 million in cash and short term investments last
fiscal year. You'd think they could find the money somewhere to hire a few
dozen people.
