Hi,
First off please forgive as this probably isn't the correct mailing
list to post such a general question but it's the only list I've
been using for a while now during my Carbon development of late.
Then you should mark the subject with [OT] to tell people it's off

I'm responsible for releasing a shareware application. I've noticed
that some shareware display a paid-customer's serial number in the
About/Startup windows and some don't. Is there a general, unwritten
rule of thumb as to whether this is a good or bad idea?
The only reason I can think of not displaying the serial number
(and only the customer's name instead) is to avoid somebody who has
access to the computer from copying down the number. The serial
number itself in my application is stored in encrypted form in a
file so unless they're a real hacker, no one can easily find the
serial number by just looking in the file. On the other hand, I see
how it can be a good thing to display the serial number as the
customer might forget/lose it and can use the About/Startup windows
as a reference.
I'd like to hear some opinions please.
One opinion is that it's kind of pointless to encrypt the serial
number if you're going to display in the About box. ;-)
Displaying it is fairly common. For some users it's the only place
they'll be able to find it a month after they enter it.
