I'm responsible for releasing a shareware application. I've noticed
that some shareware display a paid-customer's serial number in the
About/Startup windows and some don't. Is there a general, unwritten
rule of thumb as to whether this is a good or bad idea?
- it is a good idea to make the validation information you want to get
from the user in case he contacts support easily available
- it is a good idea to show everyone (and remind the user) the app is
registered to "Pirate n00b".
- as you found out yourself, it is a bad idea to display the COMPLETE
s/n.
Most s/n schemes contain checksum digits anyway, so one way is not to
show them.
