Re: Tool for eliminating ".DS_Store" files?

At the risk of drifting off-topic, and re-opening old wounds, why do we have .DS_Store files? Couldn't everything stored in them be stored in HFS+ meta data? Wouldn't that be better all around? Maybe only read & write .DS_Store files on non-HFS+ volumes?

There is no more hfs+ metadata left to use. The new extended attributes post-date .DS_Stores but could, theoretically, be used. Having an adaptive strategy makes some sense to me too.

Is there a resource online describing the content of .DS_Store?

No. The contents and structure is private.
