HIViewCreateOffscreenImage sample code?

I'd like to see how this should be used. I want to implement a simple HIView that makes simple line drawings in response to mouse clicks.

I could store the mouse location and state (like "drawing line"), and then request that the view be redrawn. While handling the draw content event, it can draw a line to the new mouse location.

But I want to draw offscreen, so I started looking in to that. The docs say CGLayers are the preferred way to do this, but there is also HIViewCreateOffscreenImage(). However, I'm not sure of the right way to use that. Is there any sample code? I really don't understand the intent of this API.
