Eh, it doesn't matter how it's handled. Someone, somewhere will hate the fact the idea itself exists, completely ignoring the merits.

While I do think using extended attributes would be the shiznit (mostly because it would decouple comments from an arbitrary file to the actual file with the comments). But even that could have only been done 10.5+, no? (Since extended attributes isn't on by default in 10.4).
