True, that. Logically we all know engineering is trade-offs but emotionally we want it all for no cost.


While I do think using extended attributes would be the shiznit (mostly because it would decouple comments from an arbitrary file to the actual file with the comments). But even that could have only been done 10.5+, no? (Since extended attributes isn't on by default in 10.4).

Yep, and on file systems that don't support it, plus still remaining backwards compatible, etc. All of these are not excuses to avoid doing something better, just considerations to take into account. I would like to see better recognition of partial solutions that move us forward at least in some conditions over a never-occurring perfect solution. Just my unsolicited $0.02.
