RE: File/Folder icons - normal and custom

Thanx for the tip, but the guidelines have little to do with my question. I already know what I want the icon to look like, and I want a custom one per each and every document (since the icon is a preview). My question was mainly technical – how do I easily achieve setting a custom icon to a specific file/folder/package?

My x-plat question, was to see if there's a way to use some kind of x-plat format for the icon, such as tiff or jpg.

Hi,

Thanx for the links. I have already seen both and I'm still not clear on the exact usage regarding files.

Say I have a custom document type my app produces, and I'd like a custom icon for each and every file, showing some kind of preview of the document. How would I do that?

Also, if my app is cross platform, is there a way to make the custom icons portable between mac and windows?

I'm a Win32 developer and i'm porting my applications from Win32 into Mac OS X 10.4 and higher. You must to read HIG (Human Interface Guide lines), i did it when i started to code in Xcode, there you can see what's an icon, what's an Icon family and suite and how to create your customized icons for your app and your docs. You can't to create an icon in Win32 and open it in Mac OS X nor vice versa, but you can to create images (JPG, TIFF, and so on) in any platform (for Mask and Logo) and after to use them in the other platform (i do it in this way). If you read the HIG (in your Xcode/developer documentation) you can see that an Document's icon it's a white page with your logo's icon inside it (watch the apps in your Mac, almost all them use this format). Basically Win32 has no rules to make icons, but Mac OS X is ruled by Aqua and you should to follow those rules if you wish that your app "feels and looks as a Mac app" ;-). Good luck.
