I have no idea what Apple has planned for the future of Carbon or how all of this will play out.

I do!

WWDC 2008 will start off with a coffin rising from the stage floor. Dry ice
creates a fogging spooky cemetary like scene. Steve Jobs enters  stage left.
Steve opens the coffin and a tombstone rises from within the coffin
stating that "Carbon is Dead. R.I.P".
