For the archives, some more investigation revealed that CFBundle was in
the clear (hardly surprising, given how widely it's used :-).

Unfortunately I had a mismatched reference count elsewhere, which was
causing me to over-release a value retrieved from CFPreferences.

This managed to trample memory in just the right way to produce this
effect; I finally managed to shift enough code around to produce a crash
elsewhere, which helped me find the real culprit...
