As has been mentioned before, a HUGE part of WWDC is simply having access to
Apple folks. I think you could reasonably go to WWDC and not go to a single
session and still have it be worthwhile. The various labs that run
continuously through the conference provide a great opportunity to have
incredibly useful discussions with the Apple folks responsible for
implementing the technologies in the OS, and the insight that you will get
from pursuing those opportunities is far beyond anything that you will be
able to get remotely. It really is the one week where Apple "pulls back the
curtains".
In addition, you will likely be able to learn more about Cocoa and how you
might start to integrate it into your work in the one week than you will be
able to over a substantial amount of time on your own.
My recommendation as someone who resisted going to WWDC for many years and
then finally went -- if you can afford it and programming on the Mac is
important to you then just go. You won't regret it.
As far as I can tell (reading the tea leaves), if you want to be programming
primarily for the Mac -- it is worth your while to learn Obj-C and Cocoa. I
think that trying to avoid it is pissing into the wind (as it were). This is
from someone who has been programming the Mac since 1987 and who has close
to a million lines of Carbon/C++ code.
My 2c.
