I thought you were using Carbon (since you posted to carbon-dev) but you're doing this in Cocoa. Two recommendations:
  1. Just use -[NSWorkspace isFilePackageAtPath:] as that does what you're looking for (and is implemented using the calls I emailed about)
  2. Ask questions about Cocoa on the Cocoa lists where there will be more people who can help.
