Finder uses data browsers in compositing windows, although I don't
know for sure that they're nib-based. I don't know of any reason why
a nib-based data browser would not work in a compositing window.
I've used a data browser in a NIB window, too. As far as one can
call what data browser does "work", it did work like a charm.
That is, if you don't mind all sorts of drag'n drop weirdness, and
some really stupid behaviour when in-line editing list items (like the
edit field not going away, and long text always scrolling to the
bottom line -- but you can have those bugs in Finder, too).
