Yes it is. But the user can cause the same issue by arranging windows
to create a complex image. If this is causing an issue, then you are
probably key framing too often.
This will result in better compression.
Even if I have a complex desktop picture it may be invisible, and
there may be other complex elements on top of it instead. Removing the
desktop picture buys you nothing in that case (in my example the
amount of visible desktop picture was less than 5% of the total
visible area). If it probably more common to see some amount of
content covering the desktop than it is to see the majority of the
desktop picture.
We change it using preferences, so there has to be a way to change
it using Carbon.
I'm not sure what you mean by "using preferences" - if you mean System
Preferences then that application has been Cocoa for its entire
lifetime. There is no API for changing the desktop picture via Carbon.
The API for that is only available on 10.6 or later.
