On Jaguar, on the local file system, I believe both Cocoa and Carbon will open files using a locking mode that prevents that file from being re-opened. In Carbon I think you have to use the opendeny modes to get this support. Note that this does not currently work for files opened on AFP file servers. I believe there's a technote about this.
