I'm not sure exactly what your goal is, but if you want some foreigh file system to be known to everything on Mac OS X, then I'd think some kind of solution within darwin itself, maybe a kernel extension or something. I don't really know much about this area. You could try asking about this on the darwin-development mailing list.
